Morn's response to the intelligence [Missions are given - see forum]
The party begins the session in the basement of Rubyem’s house, with Rubyem tied up and unconscious after the altercation. The party debates what do with her.
Yessica warns that Rubyem may wake up and cause danger even if tied up, given that she is a spellcaster. The party come to the decision that it is safest to leave her at the house – tied to the bed. The plan is to find a city guard to come and arrest her.
On leaving the house, a delivery by a dockhand arrives – apparently for Rubyem. The party and Yessica recognize the delivery as being the remaining crate from the boat they took from Deepcut, and which the two woodsmen were stewarding on the way up the Grey River and the Tesh. The party is given the crate and they take it back to Ruybem’s house. Rio uses his crowbar to prise open the crate. Inside the crate are pieces of rock, which the party suspects to be the same as the ‘black rock’ they found in Rubyem’s basement, and about which Rubyem’s raven, Smoke, was cawing.
Gaerfinas inspects the rock and concludes that it is not metal, ceramic or mineral. The party decides that it needs further inspection by someone with greater knowledge. Rio picks up one of the rocks, covers it in cloth, so that it can be taken to the castle without suspicion.
The party pick up Kelnor from the Silver Moon Inn nearer to the docks. Yessica advises that Lord Morn tends to hold an audience with members of the public at lunchtime, and so the party decides to go straight to the castle.
The party arrives at the castle on top of the hill. A courtier is at the entrance, deciding who to let in. Yessica uses her position of influence as a member of the constabulary to gain entry.
Some of the guards inside the castle are suspicious of the giant package carried by Rio, but on discovering that it is just a rock, they are happy to let the party through.
After passing through a sequence of ‘holding rooms’, the party finally make it into Lord Morn’s room, where he is sat at a table in a high-backed chair. Lord Morn seems to recognize Gaerfinas and Kelnor from their time in Lord Morn’s army.
Yessica tells Lord Morn of news from the Dalelands and introduces the party as acquaintances from Deepcut who have intelligence on important local events.
The party describe the recent events from the Dalelandsto Lord Morn:
Presumed Zhent operatives working in the Dalelands (the twelve shapeshifters).
The shapeshifter, Twleve, who the party met at the Turnfork Inn.
The fact that Twelve was discontent in his service and desired help to escape.
Murder investigation in Deepcut, with prime suspects including a shapeshifter and hooked man.
Shadow creatures who appeared when investigating the recent murder.
Ambush by bandits -- deserters from Lord Morn’s army.
Freli mentions how his father fell out with the Leafcutters guild.
Encounter with Jierdaan at the Turnfork Inn (not a shapeshifter but somehow related?)
Rio describes the encounter with Rubyem and places the rock on the table.
Lord Morn is grateful for the information provided, and claims he is aware of the operatives working in the Dalelands, but did not have knowledge of the shapeshifters. He is unsure as to why the shapeshifter in the Turnfork Inn turned to the group for help.
Lord Morn’s eyes light up as the party talk about the magical items they found at Rubyem’s house. The party place some of the magic items from Rubyem’s house: the blackrock wands, the red wand, and the parchment. Rania retains the skeleton key and teardrop wand. Rio puts down the black rock down which Haemish is going to investigate.
Lord Morn summons his Hedge Wizard Haemish, and also summons a guard to find Rubyem (the party provide the address), and bring her to a cell.
As Haemish appears, one of the cupbearers in the room makes a sudden attack on Lord Morn with a hidden sword. Lord Morn is taken surprise and takes heavy damage. The following events unfold quickly:
Yessica makes the first strike on the cupbearer.
The cupbearer assassin draws another sword and uses it to push Morn’s own out the way (it is laid casually on the feast table). However, the cupbearer rolls a critical fail and gets one of his blades stuck in the table.
Rio and Artus charge, jumping up on the table and swinging from the top of the table at the assassin.
Kelnor attacks with his crossbow from the main door.
Lord Morn and Gaerfinas make their attacks.
The wizard Hamish casts a ray to enfeeble the cupbearer. A guard makes the final attack on the cupbearer assassin, and then a scorching ray.
The cupbearer assassin falls unconscious and rapidly dies.
Gaerfinas heals Lord Morn, who is thankful to the party for saving his life. He invites the party to stay at his apartment in thanks, and hints that there will be much to discuss in the aftermath of the intelligence and the attack.
