Session 3: "Sleuths with Fortune" (2 Flamerule, DR 1372)

The group discuss the situation with Yessica, how it seemed strange how the boat left. Rania tells of the figure fleeing to a boat with another figure after the fire. Yessica explains how two men came to visit Hoseph and suggest that the group speak with his son, Freli.


By this point the group arrive at the woodsman bunkhouses, noting how each tribe have their own separate huts. Entering one of the huts, they find Festim treating the wounded guard (Johnson) who has now regained consciousness, although is still very groggy. Festim provides Rania and Gaerfinas with a spicy healing potion which immediately restores them both. He offers two more potions to Rio and Kelnor. The group lightly question the wounded guard, Johnson, but he remembers little of the night of the fire, only being struck from behind. Kelnor shows the amulet he found among the blacksmiths belongs to Yessica who explains that Freli also has a similar amulet.


Having learned what they could, the group head across town to the tradesmen domiciles. Yessica leaves the group to return to her duties. Finding the Blacksmith’s house, Rio knocks and calls out Freli’s name. They enter and tell Freli the bad news. Freli is not as shocked as expected as the group learn the amulets are magically-linked to protect Freli from harm. He felt through the amulet that his Father had died. In his despair he throws the amulet on the ground at Gaerfinas’ feet, who picks it up.


Rio questions Freli on what he knows of the strangers. Freli does not know much for sure, but feels the men are part of the Leafcutter guild. He also tells of an argument his father had with them recently about a “project”. Freli agrees to let the group open his Father’s chest, within which they find a parchment saying, "You have received payment. Load the cargo tonight." The gold is left with Frelli, but Kelnor keeps the two strange-looking triangular stones which the Blacksmith was known to speak into behind the house.


Eager to be of use, Freli convinces the group to let him tag along. They all head to the Smithy to look for some more clues. Kelnor takes the lead, ducking under a fallen beam, skillfully finding dozens of caltrops strewn about the entryway. He picks these up, and then - finding nothing else of interest - returns to the group.


The time spent moving around in the sunlight has visible effect on Rania and Gaerfinas who both now are fully recovered from their ordeal with the shadow creatures. Yessica returns to see how things are progressing. Kelnor shows the Caltrops and explains about the project and cargo being loaded. The group return again to guard Johnson to question him about any cargo he may have seen. It becomes apparent that he was not the most vigilant and may have easily missed things.


The last lead they have takes the group to the Leafcutter’s guildhall. Upon entering they meet Klogg, the apparent leader of the local chapter. Gaerfinas questions him about any guild members who may have visited recently and learns that Alvus and Onga were here two weeks ago, but left swiftly back to Daggerfalls. Artus and Rania are suspicious, feeling Klogg knows more than he is telling.


With all obvious options exhausted, the group head back to the Honourable Hound to regroup over some food. One of the rat race organisers nervously approaches Rania asking of her Elven heritage. He offers her the Cheese Knight, which she happily accepts.


Yessica finds the group, wondering why Freli is following them around like a puppy. They agree that Freli should return to Daggerfalls to be with his family. Yessica reveals she is affiliated with the Sheriffs of other local towns and they all report into Lord Morn. The strange events in Deepcut compel her to report to her superiors in Daggerfall, so she offers to accompany you, settling things with the Mayor.


Everyone eats at the Inn while the barge is readied. The group board in the early afternoon and enjoy a peaceful ride downstream until they come across a colourful boat in the distance. From afar nothing seems threatening and they are greeted by friendly, if insistent, calls that they should come over. Seeing no threat, the barge pulls up against the bank. The woman on the boat seems to be some kind of traveler and she beckons Kelnor over to have his fortune read. Gaerfinas moved on to the shore to stretch after the time spent on board.


The woman begins chanting and after a few moments the group seem transported to another realm of darkness. Taken by surprise the group are now alert. Yessica and Frelli are nowhere to be seen. After a moment, a single shadow creatures appears near the group. Taking no chances and knowing just how threatening these creatures can be, the group work quickly together to dispatch the creature with no casualties (summary below)

  1. Rania shoots her crossbow at the creature, dealing minor damage

  2. Artus moves away from the group, gaining speed before throwing his Javelin.

  3. The darkness throws off Artus' aim, his Javelin sailing into the void beyond

  4. Rio moves up to join Rania firing a crossbow bolt dealing more damage

  5. The shadow dashes towards Rania but cannot deal any damage

  6. Kelnor moves out wide to gain a clear shot, wounding the shadow some more

  7. Gaerfinas summons a sacred flame, dispersing the shadow

  8. Upon killing the shadow, the group are returned to the daylight


Kelnor reacts quickly and with anger, diving towards the woman, and pressing his knife to her throat, demanding an explanation. The two men on shore seem equally shocked by whatever just happened while their sister went into a trance. Rio and Gaerfinas are close enough to know they are sincere. The woman is terrified by what has happened, desperately waving a bundle of lavender to clear away evil spirits. She says she was also taken, but managed to will herself out. She seems shocked hearing of the shadow creature, offering all of the group more lavender bundles for protection.


Unable to get any definitive answers form the woman, the group return to the barge and resume their journey downstream.
